Updating Your Operating System.

What is an operating system?

An operating system consists of several software programs that manage and control the computer’s hardware (such as the processor / memory / storage resources). It performs the function of providing an interface (menus / icons / control panels) for the user to interact with the computer’s hardware, eg to use the network / wifi card, mouse, keyboard and internet browser to access the internet.

The Operating Systems manages the computer processes, enables multitasking (using several applications at once), memory allocation to multiple running programs, input and output devices, file management (storing and retrieving information in files stored on drives) and system security.

Operating system vendors such as Microsoft Windows, Mac Os, Linux regularly release updates to improve functionality / reliability by fixing bugs and to resolve / patch any vulnerabilities that can be exploited by cyber criminals.

As the computer hardware technology advances the Operating vendors often release an entirely new Operating System (eg Windows 11 replacing Windows 10), as the previous operating system will not be compatible or able to take advantage of the faster performing new technology.
